2014 European Championships

From the 27th to the 30th of August, the European Championships took place in Cunovo, Slovakia. Best of European athletes stood there, ready to smell  blood. The contest occurred on a small roller in the right loop of the mythic Bratislava’s pond.

Athletes of the French team were expected. It was the occasion for me to put my tittle back into play for the third time. As in all contests, qualifying rounds and steps to achieve the final has been treacherous for some of us.

Lots of kayakists hit this atypical roller wall. As for me, stress has been here all long. The fear to fail reaching the final hunted me all week, despite my first solid run. Touch this golden medal again, reach the first place on the podium for the third time…

The stakes  were huge. I wanted to stay clear-headed right to the end! Unfortunately I don’t think there is some user manual, some instruction book to achieve oneself goal…

I just took the step one by one, without planning anything, without thinking of the consequences of  defeat or victory. I focused on the action, sailing and the feeling of this time. In the roller, I didn’t set a precise sequence of figures. I just did those figures following my position…my feeling. It’s one of the best sailings I’ve ever realized. Just let the kayak lead let it go but keep the instinct…As well as a victory on myself, I learned a lot and shared enormously.

Relief and joy were all there when the speaker announced my first place. “The new European Champion for 2014 is Marlène Devillez! For the third consecutive time!”.
