I had a couple of Cabelas Boundary Waters Drybags whose straps utterly failed on their maiden voyage so I immediately starting shopping replacements. I was looking at Granite Gear...as that is supposedly the standard for high quality, affordable gear...and this pack lined up well in size with their #4 pack and lined up with the more expensive Quetico pack with back padding. This pack gives the size of the #4 with the padding of the Quetico. I did pick up a #4 on sale and the material is thinner and the pack doesn't have much form. The quality of the construction between the two is excellent. I packed 65 lbs of gear in both and ****** on all straps, jumped up and down, pulled them around at weird angles, and not a seam or stitch barked in protest in either. This is a big pack...I could double the gear I put in there. For me, the features, the quality, the size, the padded back, the sturdier fabric, the tumpline...would lead me to choose this pack even if it were the price of the GG Quetico. (Levelsix...not saying you should raise prices! Y'all are doing good!) The list price...the Algonquin is $8 more than the #4. Buying the Algonquin is an absolute no-brainer. There is a new player in the portage pack game and they are shooting for MVP.
the new standard for portage packs.
purchased this spring and had it out four times this summer. all the room you could ever need, very nice thick fabric and a great price make it an absolute winner. the side handles were something I never knew I needed. great for lifting, clipping small dry pack as well as carabiners and ****** block. its versatility comes from its simplicity. great pack!
